Atalanta's in pruimenboom 130 x 100 cm

Red Admirals in plum tree 

-Najaar van 2024 waren er opeens veel atalanta vlinders in de oude pruimenboom. Ze aten van de overrijpe pruimen, om doen energie op te doen voor de grote trek zuidwaards. Atalanta's vliegen naar het zuiden om te overwinteren en zich voort te planten. In het voorjaar vliegt een nieuwe generatie Atalanta's weer naar ons land. Dit werk verwijst naar deze ongelofelijke reis.

-Autumn 2024 suddenly a lot of Red Admiral butterflies were in the old plum tree. The foraged from the overripe plums to gain energy for their migration to the south. Red Admirals fly to South Europe to hibernate and reproduce. In spring a new generation Red Admirals fly to our country again.  This artwork refers to this incredible journey.

Winterkoninkjes in wilde rozen -  (90 x 65 cm)   / Wrens in wild roses (90 x 65 cm)  

Winterkoninkjes zijn een charmante verschijning. Ze zijn klein en leven een bijna onzichtbaar leven in de beschutting van dichte ondergroei van bossen en tuinen. Maar in deze aquarel wilde ik ze op groot formaat in de hoofdrol zetten. Vooral in het broedseizoen zingt de winterkoning uitbundig, een melodieuze en explosieve zang vol trillertjes. De zang is belangrijk bij de paarvorming. Het klinkt prachtig en het zien van een zingende winterkoning inspireerde me voor het maken van dit werk.

Wrens are charming creatures. They are small and living almost secretly in the shelter of dense undergrowth of forests and gardens. But in this watercolor on a XL size, I wanted them to have a leading role. Especially during the breeding season wrens sing exuberant, a melodious song full of thrills. The singing also plays an important role in the mating season, it's such a beautiful sound that spotting a singing wren inspired me to create this work.
